Dietary Supplements: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

More than half of U.S. adults take a dietary supplement. This week's 60 Minutes Wellness briefing walks through how to read a label, why “natural” is not the same as proven, and the questions worth asking your pharmacist or clinician — drawn from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.

Diet advice

Food first, then a targeted supplement — if you need one

Most U.S. adults can meet vitamin and mineral needs with meals. A supplement fills a documented gap (for example vitamin D in winter, B12 on a vegan pattern, or folic acid before pregnancy). It is not a shortcut around vegetables.

  1. Build plates around vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, nuts, and fish or lean protein.
  2. If you take a multivitamin, choose one close to 100% Daily Value — not mega-doses.
  3. Bring the bottle to your next appointment. Interactions with blood thinners and diabetes medicines are real.
